Many people look at Nest and think – does the world really need a better smoke detector? Or a better thermostat? The short answer is yes. Read this Nest Smoke Detector Review before you buy a new Nest Smoke Detector.
What is it?
Nest has made a business (recently Nest sold to Google for $3.2 billion) by taking un-sexy household items like the Nest Thermostat into objects of our desire. I’m one of those, that loves everything Nest does. The Nest Protect is both a smoke and carbon monoxide detector. Nest made the detector because almost “two-thirds of US home fire deaths happened in homes with no smoke alarm or no working smoke alarm.” Crazy. But that’s the truth – most of us hate our smoke detectors. They always go off at exactly the wrong time, when we are cooking dinner. The smoke detectors deliver a huge number of false positives. Then, we remove the batteries and forget to put them back. That’s why Nest created the first Smart Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Detector.
How does it work?
The Nest Protect works like any other smoke detector that you’ve used, but simply put, is a lot less annoying. Usually, a smoke detector is silent of a full on assault of your ears. The Nest Protect doesn’t simply yell at you, it gives you a simple, less annoying alert to warns you it detects smoke. The Nest Protect doesn’t go crazy, it simply lights up yellow and alerts you in a human voice that it detects smoke.
Here’s where the Nest Protect is brilliant: no more climbing ladders or hitting the smoke detector with a broom. You simply need your hand to wave below the detector. That’s it. No more annoying false positives.
On top of that, you can be sure that your family is safe, wherever you are. If you are away and have the Nest App installed on your phone, you can get an alert saying it detects smoke or carbon monoxide in your home. A “dumb” smoke detector doesn’t work like that at all.
Even better yet, furnaces are the biggest cause of carbon monoxide. If Nest Protect detects carbon monoxide and you have a Nest Thermostat, it will automatically turn off the furnace. Simply brilliant.
The Nest Protect installs very easily, just like the Nest Thermostat, and fits in most existing fire detector slots. It comes in both a battery-powered version and a wired version, depending upon your setup.
Should you buy a Nest Protect?
The short answer is YES – you should buy a Nest Protect. Some people will complain that the Nest Smoke Detector/Carbon Monoxide Detector is too expensive. But, can you really place a price on your family’s safety? This simple device will make sure that your family and home is safe at all times.
