Should you get the new Nest? What’s the difference between 2nd and 3rd Generation Nest?

I recently saw the previous generation Nest for $199. The newest Nest Thermostat, the 3rd Generation Nest Thermostat is $250. So, is it worth the extra $50 to get the 2nd Generation Nest? I had to search pretty far and long to find the differences, but here they are:

  • The 2nd Generation Nest Thermostat is slightly thicker than the 3rd Generation Nest Thermostat. The 3rd Generation is 1.2 inches deep (the amount the Nest Thermostat stick out from the wall). The 2nd Generation is 3.2 inches deep.
  • The 3rd Generation Nest Thermostat has a brighter, higher-resolution screen than the 2nd Generation Nest Thermostat. I only have the 2nd Generation Nest, so I can’t tell you how big of a difference that makes.
  • The 3rd Generation has a feature called “Farsight” – that seems you approaching the thermostat from across the room and shows you the time and temperature.

I’m moving to a new house and needed a 2nd Nest Thermostat. I found a rare sale on the 2nd Generation Nest Thermostat, so I ended up getting the 2nd Generation Nest Thermostat. I’d keep an eye out for sales on the 2nd Generation Nest Thermostat here. I don’t think it’s worth it to get the 3rd Generation Nest Thermostat unless you NEED to stay on the cutting edge.
